Game Narrative

As a group we were tasked with developing a prototype for a narrative-based game with only four theme images to choose from. Using Unreal Engine 4, we developed a short, first-person narrative horror game set in an old cabin with a lone individual with a mysterious past.

Task

After creating an interactive story following the Hero's Journey using Twine, our second coursework for this module involved us working together as a group to produce a narrative game prototype. The specifications remained particularly open and we were allowed to choose what platform, genre and approach to take. The only main constraint was that our game was to be inspired by up to four images that were provided to us.

As a team of four, we initially brainstormed various ideas and keywords from the four images. From there, we produced two loose concepts for a narrative game and began prototyping parts of it in Unreal Engine 4. Unfortunately, through this initial prototyping, our two main concepts were unfeasible due to time and scope.

Inspired by different horror films and first-person horror games such as P.T., Resident Evil 7 and Layers of Fear, we eventually wanted to produce a short first-person horror experience in a small environment. By continuing to brainstorm ideas with regards to the four images, we were able to produce a concept that we were all keen to pursue. By placing particular focus on scope and time, we planned out a short first-person horror game where the player would explore an old cabin and learn about their character's past. With regards to scope, we introduced multiple antagonists and their presence without the player ever physically interacting with them. Through significant use of a beat chart for mapping out the narrative and game events and requirements, we were able to produce a fairly polished prototype which would demonstrate our game in terms of narrative and mechanics.

At the end of the project, we were required to do a quick presentation covering our concept, design process and production. Our slides for this can be seen as a .pdf here: click here

My Roles

  • Worked as a team to brainstorm and produce concepts for a first-person narrative horror game

  • Worked closely as a team to produce a beat chart and other related documentation

  • Cooperatively sketched and blocked out level layout and key areas

  • Sourced a range of marketplace assets which would fit the project's requirements and scope

  • Produced and detailed several sections of the cabin level

  • Implemented a large range of Blueprints, scripted events, audio and UI for the project

  • Heavily configured default first-person character controller for a more fitting experience

Demo Video

As part of our final presentation, we were required to produce a short demo video which would demonstrate the game. Since our game had a particular focus on mystery and horror, we wanted to demonstrate the game whilst avoiding several main spoilers. As such, I had the task of producing a short demo video / trailer which would meet this criteria. This video can be seen below:
