Party Pugs

A tricky pug-puzzler out on iOS and Android: I did some nice levels, some hard levels and some levels that might keep you up all night (...sorry in advance!) Also provided my first opportunity to showcase a game and help out at a games convention - scary but exciting stuff!

Project & Role

I was contracted by the awesome Steely Glint Games as a level designer and worked on this project throughout the summer of 2016! My work was handled remotely and we used Trello and other tools effectively to manage tasks and deadlines. In addition to this, we made use of Slack and Google Hangouts as a great means of communication and had regular meetings throughout the project.

As part of this project, my main role included working with the lead designer and level designers to produce many levels which would add towards the set target amount of levels for the game's release. These levels were designed carefully with respect to the game's mechanics and difficulty, requiring several iterations and corrections to be made throughout development to ensure they were of high quality to be shipped. With Party Pugs being a puzzle game, extra care and consideration had to be taken to ensure that the levels remained ultimately fair and challenging when appropriate.

In addition to this, I had various other design roles throughout my time working on this project. One of which was creating a variety of fun and silly background environments through the use of available assets in the game - some of which can be seen in the current promotional screenshots of the game! Interestingly, with this task, these environments had to be created with particular care to optimisation and positioning since the target platform was mobile and tablets. Another task - which came almost naturally - was discovering fun bugs and ways to break the game which I was often able to reproduce and report (in the nicest way I could!) As well as this, I also helped out with some research by looking into various effective mobile puzzle games on the market and wrote some nice things for some of the cool pugs in the game.

Resonate 2016

During the summer of 2016, Glasgow had one of its first gaming conventions with a variety of games and events on display. The publisher of Party Pugs, All 4 Games, was provided with booth space and provided us with the opportunity to showcase the game even though it was still in development. Alongside this, Glasgow Caledonian University were also provided booth space for students to display games they had been working on throughout the summer. As both a developer for Party Pugs and as a student of Glasgow Caledonian University, I was provided with the amazing opportunity to help out and showcase the game at this event. Over the space of three days, this provided me with first-hand experience of showcasing a game to attendees and helping out at a gaming convention, something that was immensely uplifting and enlightening. (And it also left me with a sore back and feet for a while - good times!)
